Messe München: 10 Years European Fashion Award FASH

Adidas, Hugo Boss, G-Star or Zalando, Vivienne Westwood or Wolfgang Joop – the careers of European Fashion Award FASH winners are impressive. The renowned young designer award by the German Fashion Industry Foundation (Stiftung der Deutschen Bekleidungsindustrie - SDBI) has been committed to support the development of fashion talents for the last 10 years.

In his anniversary address, Tobias Gröber, Chairman of SDBI and Executive Director Business Unit Consumer Goods at Messe München, emphasized the importance of targeted support of young talents in the fashion industry: “This is not charity, but an investment in the future”.

Contrary to countries like Italy, France, England, Turkey or the United States, there is a lack of development in Germany. With its European Fashion Award FASH the SDBI has set standards for the global endorsement of young creative talents for the last 10 years. The foundation was honored for its involvement by the German government’s business initiative “Germany – Land of Ideas”. The laudation reads: “Vision, creativity and passion are the components with which SDBI sets long-term signals for the future in the rather fast-moving world of fashion”.

The involvement of SDBI goes beyond the award itself. In addition to a photo shoot, presentation of the projects and public relations and media work, the winning students have access to young designers with a few years of business experience under their belt. This creates an eye-level dialog that helps the winners with their entry into the professional fashion industry. The SDBI’s new Talent Exchange, starting in October, will bring together students and fashion companies. This will turn the “Investment In The Future”, which SDBI is committed to, into reality. In addition, SDBI wants to present the young designers’ ideas and views to the public, at events such as the Open House at the Federal Chancellery.

The presentation of the 10th European Fashion Award FASH was held at the start of the Berlin Fashion Week at the impressive Neue Museum (New Museum) in Berlin, one of UNESCO’s world heritage sites. Six students outshone 141 co-competitors and received prizes with a value totaling 80,000 Euro. An international jury of experts evaluated the submitted projects, this year with the subject “Freedom”. In addition to the final product the evaluation also focused on the research, concept, design process, finish and tailoring, as well as presentation. The award-winning projects consist of concepts exploring the potentials of fashion.

Klaus Steilmann, at the time Europe’s largest manufacturer of women’s fashion, launched the non-profit German Fashion Industry Foundation (Stiftung der Deutschen Bekleidungsindustrie) in 1978. Today, the work of SDBI is supported by Messe München GmbH and the SDBI Circle of Friends, including companies such as Allude, Bueronardin, Closed as well as Freitag. Creative Consultant Joachim Schirrmacher has been volunteering as the head of foundation since 2004.
