Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner Sports Personality of the Year

On Tuesday, extreme alpinist Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner received the ISPO Trophy in Munich, honoring her with the title of “Sports Personality of the Year”. With more than 2,600 exhibitors from close to 50 countries ISPO MUNICH is the world’s largest sports exhibition and the most important global sports business network. Kaltenbrunner is the first woman to climb all 14 eight-thousand-meter peaks without supplemental oxygen. She was also honored for her involvement in social projects. Kaltenbrunner has been an active supporter of Nepalhilfe Beilngris for many years, a charitable organization assisting with the construction of village schools, children’s homes and medical stations.

“I am very happy to have received the ISPO Trophy. It is a great honor for me to be on a list of recipients that includes such prominent names such as Max Schmeling, Alberto Tomba, Markus Wasmeier or Pelé,” award winner Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner said. The presentation, held during ISPO VIP Dinner at the ICM—Internationales Congress Center München, hosted more than 350 decision makers and key players from the sports industry, as well as stars from the world of sports. Norbert Niederkofler provided the culinary program. He is South Tyrol’s first two-star chef, and prepared a delightful menu following the motto “Cook the Mountain”, focusing on the virtues and finesse of alpine cuisine and culture.

Klaus Dittrich, CEO and Chairman of Messe München, also a passionate mountaineer, who took part in an ambitious tour of Mont Blanc last year, was especially pleased with the selection of this year’s winner: “By presenting the trophy to Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner we honored a very special athlete who not only has accomplished the extraordinary in sports, but also distinguishes herself in terms of her involvement in social projects.”

The ISPO Trophy has been awarded to extraordinary personalities in the world of sports since 1971. Among the winners are legendary names such as Max Schmeling, Pelé, Reinhold Messner, Willi Bogner, Vitali Klitschko or Magdalena Neuner.
